How to Find the Right Farrier for Your Horse

Your horse's hooves are the foundation of their health and performance. A good farrier isn't just someone who trims hooves. They are a critical partner in your horse's wellbeing.

What to Look For

Qualifications matter. In Canada, look for farriers who are certified through the Ontario Farriers Association or the Journeyman Farrier designation. These certifications mean the farrier has passed practical and written exams.

Experience with your discipline. A farrier who specializes in racehorses may not be the best fit for a trail horse or a dressage horse. Ask specifically about their experience with your horse's breed and use.

Questions to Ask

• How long have you been a farrier?
• Are you certified? Through which organization?
• Can you provide references from clients with similar horses?
• How do you handle a horse that's difficult to shoe?
• What's your protocol if my horse throws a shoe between visits?

Red Flags

• Unwilling to provide references
• Doesn't ask about your horse's history or workload
• Can't explain why they're using a particular shoe or trim
• No follow-up communication after visits
