Whether you’re competing, trail riding, or just staying connected with your local equestrian scene, joining your provincial horse federation comes with important perks — and it’s a required step for getting your Equestrian Canada (EC) sport license.
🧭 What Is a Provincial Horse Federation?
A Provincial Horse Federation is your regions governing body for Equestrian Sport. These organizations support grassroots riding, offer insurance, promote equestrian events, and coaching certification up to Competition Coach Specialist.
Each province has its own federation
- British Columbia – Horse Council BC (HCBC)
- Alberta – Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF)
- Saskatchewan – Saskatchewan Horse Federation (SHF)
- Manitoba – Manitoba Horse Council (MHC)
- Ontario – Ontario Equestrian (OE)
- Quebec – Cheval Québec
- Nova Scotia – Nova Scotia Equestrian Federation (NSEF)
- New Brunswick – New Brunswick Equestrian Association (NBEA)
- Prince Edward Island – Island Horse Council (IHC)
- Newfoundland & Labrador – Newfoundland Equestrian Association (NEA)

Most provincial memberships include personal liability insurance (up to $5 million), which protects you in case of horse-related accidents — even off-property. - Eligibility for EC Licenses
You must hold a provincial membership to purchase a Sport License from Equestrian Canada (required for competitions). - Member Discounts
